Hurricane Katrina cut into our efforts for
Roatan but the program
was a tremendous success for it's first year.
247 shoe boxes were filled
with useful and fun gifts for the indigenous
children or Roatan were
shipped the first week of November and have now been
distributed.
This added to Nancy Agnew's
'Littlest Angels' Christmas program.
Payless ShoeSource is
our 'empty shoe-box angel'
When you shop at the Payless ShoeSource store at either; 120 Dorman Centre Dr. or at Westgate Mall in Spartanburg, SC. you can leave your empty shoe-box to help us with Project 1,000 or even take it home and be a Project 1,000 donor yourself.
We want to extend our thanks to the local Payless ShoeSource stores for their contribution to our Project 1,000. Please shop their stores.
Special thanks to an un-named Business, which donated the cardboard boxes needed to ship the shoe-boxes to Roatan, Honduras. Your gift is certainly appreciated!
WHAT IS 'PROJECT 1,000'?
Project 1,000 is a Christmas program for those who have nothing by our standards.
Review the pictures in the information sheet below and pray about your support of our program.

HOW TO MAKE A SMILE 2005 CHRISTMAS 2005 SMILE PICTURES
THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN COMPLETED FOR THIS 2005 BUT READ ON DOWN FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT IT.
This program is set up for those children who have almost nothing; and nothing by our standards. I have included some pictures that are representative of their houses and conditions.
Below is a letter I received
from Nancy, who is in charge of the program
in Roatan. Their need is so great!
Imagine getting only water and a cookie
for Christmas - - - Spartanburg Angels
is striving to make it a better
Christmas for those in need. Your help is much
appreciated!

Dear Robert,
YES, YES, YES we
aim for 1000 kids but there are always more we do not get. We start a few days
before Christmas having parties that we have pre arranged several months in
advance with the
different communities to set up a party. Some only have water
and one cookie each. Others have
cake and punch and others have food. This is
done by the neighborhood hosting the party. Next year
for a few of the poorer
neighborhoods we might try to buy a few cake mixes and frosting eggs and have
them bake them. We try to give a small group of gifts example. (mostly all used)
doll, color or paint book
with paint or colors (maybe 4 or 5 colors) cookie few
pieces of candy and a apple or orange maybe a
other small toy.
While waiting for
Santa they sign songs and someone tells the Christmas story of Jesus and sing a
few
praise songs and then Santa comes and he holds each and every child on his
lap and I hand presents,
others hand cookie and candy and fruit. . We have them
color coded in a colored plastic bag or magic
marker ages and sex. Then
off to the next place. What is left over On Christmas day we go out to
the neighborhoods and sing and yell for kids and ring bells and out of the bushes
they come and we
hand out more. For three years now I have not had time to shop,
or cook or put up a tree and these
are the best Christmases ever. The money my
husband and myself would have spent on our kids or
ourselves is spent on bags
and candy and fruit. My two Grand kids do not know the date of Christmas,
so we
do it in November in the States. God is good and last year we were short about
250 gifts and
Friendships came up with little kids toy computers and glow in the
dark products. Well, that is how
we do it and if we could get a few shoe
boxes more the better. I have two friends in WI that get all
the used toys
and as their funds hold out, they mail them starting now. They work in a place
that
gets donated items and they are allow to share with us. I should send you
Chars email address. She
is our Santa along with her friend Irene.
Have a good night.
Oh yeah last year I sang so much and yelled that I hurt my vocal cords to the
point they took over three months to heal.
Blessings,
Nancy

What is the shoe-box program? We will supply you or your organization with the number of empty shoe-boxes you can fill. Each donor should take their empty shoe box and fill it with items that would be both of help to the indigenous peoples of Roatan and also be fun for them to receive at Christmas. A suggested item list is below.
When does the program begin? It has already begun. As of September 27, 2005 we have received commitments for 190 shoe boxes. The sooner these items can be put together the better as it takes time to prepare them for shipping and export to Roatan, Honduras. Our absolute cut-off date is November 1, 2005 so that they might arrive in time for Christmas.
How to obtain a shoe-box: Contacting us will always get you the number of empty shoe boxes you might want. Even better yet; suggest this program to your church or civic group. If they need more information, I would be delighted to come to address your group.
Suggested items for the box: It is impossible to get the boxes in the correct number to match to a child’s age or whether they are a boy or a girl so our suggestion is to put a mix of items for all ages into the box. What doesn’t fit one age would be given to another member of the family or traded with another child. Nothing would be wasted.
We request that nothing require batteries or electricity; both of which they do not have; also, nothing requiring refrigeration. Also, no guns or war toys, please. Water there is a precious commodity so nothing like a super-soaker or similar toy which would require water would be appropriate. Customs and shipping regulations and cost can be a problem so please, no liquid products.
We encourage everyone to pray
about what they would put in their box or boxes. A mix of useful items and
fun items would be wonderful! Staple items are a sure
winner for every family and all ages. Items such as: A bar of soap, face size wash cloth, tooth brush and tooth paste, a
comb & a small bag of candies (individually wrapped and not subject to melting
in the heat) would all be winners.
Other general suggestions might be: A ball which might be for many different ages. A
small stuffed toy. Regular #2 lead pencils. Crayons, and coloring book. An
easy reading book (In English) for children.
Stick style ball point pens. Other
toys which are durable. And most important;
your imagination for whatever else
you want to send.
If the box is directed towards a particular age or sex, please mark the box as such.
Decorate the box as you desire but do not seal it as it will have to be inspected.
Please make
your commitment for whatever number of shoe-boxes
you feel lead to fill.
When the box
has been filled, please return it to your collection point
or call us to arrange
a drop-off point or for pickup.
Our
deadline
needs to be November 1, 2005 due to collection
and shipping times.
Please accept our heartfelt thanks from those who have so little but can benefit from our generosity.
