ADOPT A SCHOOL

Spartanburg Angels is a non-profit charitable organization chartered in South Carolina, USA

Imagine, if you would, a school with no electricity, running water, windows to keep the dust and rain out and almost totally devoid of basic supplies like; pencils, crayons, paper, books, and other such supplies.  This describes the elementary school in La Colonia in Roatan, Honduras.

This school serves approximately 150 children in two four hour shifts in the age group of 5 to 7.  The early formative years!  What a start they get.  The teachers are loving and dedicated but only have a lesson plan and some posters to work with.  In order for a child to attend school they must furnish their own uniform and school supplies.  More children in La Colonia do not go to school than go to school.

In Honduras, the school system only goes through the sixth grade.  And their sixth grade would not be anywhere near the level of ours.  A very large percentage of the children quit school in the fourth grade either because they cannot afford to go or must help earn money for the family.  So the children getting a better start so they are interested in learning is even more important.

We learned this and more on our recent mission trip.  You can see the full details on our MS PowerPoint show by clicking here.

Two areas of need have been identified.

General school supplies (A list made out by the teachers and translated by our interpreter is printed below.) and repairs and improvements to the building including getting them electricity.  The school had two light bulbs with wiring coming down to an electrical outlet on the wall but no electricity.  That might be due to two different causes.  The wiring has not been hooked up and they cannot afford to do so, but the more likely explanation is that they cannot afford the cost of the electricity which runs about three times our rate here in the US.  I was recently told by one of our island contacts that what we would call the 'school district' doesn't have the money to pay for electricity.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED. * In quantities for 150 children
We need these items ASAP as their school year has already begun!

Papel Bonk might also mean:  Role Book but is most likely 'lined writing paper'.

1.  General first aid kit.
2.  Stickers to be used for awards and incentives.
3.  Coloring books. (Christian material suggested.)

Dear supporters:

GOD calls us to be good stewards of HIS money.  There are certain items that we can get wholesale.  That doesn’t mean that you are not able to find them at lower cost, but these are good prices.  The prices do not include shipping.

It would be such a blessing if you would donate one of these items for the school.

The Honduran school year is different than ours.  They get out for what would be our summer between classes around late December, so they need these supplies ASAP.

Please check over the list and see if you could donate any of these items.

Yours in CHRIST,

Robert Black

Thanking you in advance.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Repairs and improvements list.

1.  Resurface the floor.  The floor in the school is a very rough, pebbled, concrete which is impossible to sweep clean.  It also has some holes in it which cause the chairs to tip over if a chair leg gets into one or the children trip in them, as one girl did while we were there.  She fell on the floor and scraped her leg and the school didn't have any medications to put on it.

2.  Electrical wiring to be hooked up, if necessary, and a source of funds to pay the electric bill.

3.  Shutters for the window areas that can be raised or lowered during rainy days.

4.  General painting inside and out.

6.  Roof painted with a reflective sealer.

NOTE:  Repairs to the school would have to be done during the mid January to mid February time frame as that is when the school is out for their "summer" break.
