SPARTANBURG ANGELS

CHRISTIAN MISSION TO THE INDIGENOUS CHILDREN OF ROATAN, HONDURAS

Family Saludables (Healthy Families) - AIDS Clinic

Family Saludables, which means; "Healthy Families", helps reduce the mother to child transmission rate of AIDS. With proper care, nutrition and treatment, babies testing positive at birth have a 85% chance of testing negative at 6 months.

Honduras has the highest AIDS rate in the Western Hemisphere. Roatan has one of the highest in Honduras PER CAPITA. The numbers may be even higher than that though as many islanders get tested on the mainland due to lack of confidentiality in the hospital. Due to lack of education, islanders who are known to have AIDS are shunned. Because of island lifestyles, large fishing industry, cruise ship dockings and promiscuity the spread of AIDS is rapid. Due to the lack of medicines and poor dietary habits and rapid spread of infections along with some substandard medical experience the average lifespan on the island from positive test to death is 12 months due to late testing. The average life span in North America is 15 years.

Family Saludables is here on the island of Roatan, Honduras to provide education, HIV testing (with maximum confidentiality), counseling and a home visitor program so these services can be provided without the stigma of coming to our office. There are plans for the expansion of this program into other areas in need.

If the incidence of AIDS can be reduced and children properly treated, then the incidence of homeless children can be reduced.

Greatest Needs:
- Baby Formula- any brand or type, given to HIV infected mothers so they have the option to feed them without nursing them thus decreasing the risk of transmitting HIV. All babies born to HIV positive mothers are exposed to the disease. Some of them will go on to develop the disease. Eliminating breast feeding decreases the probability the baby will develop it.
We particularly need powdered baby formula as most of our clients have no refrigeration. Expired formula is fine up to five years after the expire date

TIP:  If you are traveling to Roatan; one thing that is always in need is powdered baby formula.  Discount stores like Sam's Club and Costco have their own store brands which are about half as expensive as the name brands and just as good as the name brands.

- Infant and Prenatal Vitamins
- Antibiotics
- Nebulizers, tubing and inhalation solution
- Condoms- marked latex
- Baby care items: bottles, cloth diapers, baby wash cloths, reusable wipes, diaper bags, pacifiers, small toys for stimulation, teething rings, baby lotion, soap, powder, shampoo, socks, shoes, warm weather clothing, stuffed animals and many other items a new baby would need.
- Many times these children are orphaned and have other siblings so toys, clothing and shoes are needed for all ages.
- Sterile needles and syringes used for testing
- Sample or travel size perfumes, lotions, and soaps used to entice pregnant women to be tested for HIV.
