Spartanburg Angels' mission is to the island of Roatan, Honduras and primarily to the community of La Colonia. Recently their one insufficient well went dead... This has created a hotbed of opportunity for disease and is already taking the lives of these precious children.
Below is a quote from Peggy Stranges, Director of Clinica Esperanza (Clinic of Hope)
We see in Clinica Esperanza about 160 patients a week and one half of those are children. Of the 80 children about one half come to us with water born illnesses such as Scabies, Impetigo, Dehydration, Fever, Diarrhea. Dehydration and Diarrhea are the leading causes of death in children under five in Honduras.
When there was water available in La Colonial, we saw a great reduction in these diseases. We also saw a great reduction in other ailments for when your body is stressed with not enough of the proper hydration and other nutrients, then it is an opportunistic host for other diseases.
If we do not move with haste to solve the water problem in La Colonial, we will have a serious outbreak of Cholera very soon. I doubt if we will be without work if the problem is solved as we can concentrate on teaching good health practices and congenital and familial illnesses, and the people will have much easier lives.
Blessings, Peggy Stranges, RN, Director
Spartanburg Angels has begun a fund-raiser, with the goal of raising $16,000 by December 1, 2007 in order to help this community get a new well and the pumping, storage and piping necessary to provide this life-saving pure water. The churches, businesses and civic groups below have joined with us in this project. We thank them from the bottom of our heart and hope that your group will join this growing project.
Each location is taking either a five or a three gallon water bottle, representative of their water needs, to collect lose change and even folding money to aid us in this project. Would you take one also???

Gastroenteritis is the most common illness associated with drinking polluted water. Gastroenteritis occurs in a variety of forms that may have one or more of the following symptoms: chills, nausea, diarrhea, stomach ache, head ache, and fever. Other minor illnesses can result from drinking polluted water include diseases affecting the eye, ear, skin, and upper respiratory infections. In highly polluted water a person is exposed to more serious diseases like Amoebic dysentery, Cholera, Giardiasis, Hepatitis , Intestinal parasites, Norwalk Virus, Shigellosis, Viral Gastroenteritis, and Viral Respiratory Infections. Polluted water is the major cause of death in small children, infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems as they are the most likely to develop illnesses or infection after drinking polluted water.
